Dr. Chiara Martino (MD, PhD) is a young researcher at the University of Palermo, Italy. In 2012 she received her Master degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Palermo (Italy). She accomplished her Ph.D in 2017 in Cellular Biology from University of Palermo (Italy) with a project in collaboration with CNR (Italian National Research Council) and she received research training as visitor scholar from University of Sydney (Australia), where she compared the effects of marine pollutants between Mediterranean and Australian sea urchin species. She is interested in evaluating the potential risk of new emerging pollutants on marine organisms, investigating the effects at the morphological, cellular and molecular levels. Specifically, she is studying the defense strategies activated after stressors exposure (e.g apoptosis and autophagy) and the changes in gene expression and biomineralization. Chiara is a member of the ABCD (the Italian Society for Cellular and Developmental Biology) scientific society and of the Youth Committee of the Italian Commission for UNESCO as a scientific advisor. She has numerous publications in highly prestigious journals and several presentations in both national and international conferences.
Chiara Martino Research Interests Marine ecotoxicology, Environmental Sciences, Biomineralization, Cellular Stress, Sea Urchin Embryo Development.
