Dr. Veljko Veljkovic is bioinformatics scientist in the Institute of Nuclear Sciences VINCA, Belgrade, Serbia and co-founder of the biotech company Biomed Protection, Galveston, US. Veljkovic’s main scientific achievements are: discovery of the electron-ion interaction potential (EIIP) and establishing the concept the long-range molecular interactions (LRMI) in biological systems. Concept of LRMI and EIIP served as a base for development of the informational spectroscopy method (ISM), representing a virtual spectroscopy method for study of the protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions, structure-function analysis of proteins, functional mapping of DNA sequences, assessment of the biological effect of mutations, modulation of the biological function of proteins and de novo design of peptides and proteins with the desired biological function. The ISM also served as the basis for development of the algorithm for investigation of the functional evolution of proteins and genes. The EIIP was also successfully applied for investigation of different phenomena in solid state physics, material science, and environmental science. Veljkovic published over 90 articles in peer reviewed journals and several monographs and patents.
