Prof. Vishal Saxena is working as an Associate Professor in Department of Biological Sciences (Molecular Parasitology & Systems Biology Lab), Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan, India since 2015. Previous to this he joined the department as Assistant Professor in 2006. Prof. Saxena did graduation in Pharmacy (University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, August 1999) followed by Masters in Engineering (Biotechnology) (BITS, Pilani, June 2001) and Ph. D. on the apicoplast genome from Plasmodium vivax Indian field isolates (Biological Sciences Group, BITS, Pilani, October 2006). During his Ph.D., he was awarded with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Senior Research Fellowship (2003-2006). He is actively involved in teaching and research, and has supervised many Ph.D., graduate and post-graduate student thesis. He is also a member of institute senate and various institute and departmental committees.
Prof. Saxena’s thrust area of research is Molecular Biology of Malaria parasites. His group is focusing on various aspects related to P. vivax infections in humans, apicoplast and its genome, metabolic pathways functional in the apicoplast, hypothetical proteins encoded by P. vivax nuclear genome. He is a recipient of national and international awards including Young Scientist Award (at RMRCT, Jabalpur, M. P., INDIA, 2007), Indian National Science Academy Bilateral Exchange Fellowship (2017) for Senior Scientists, and 2017 ASM-IUSSTF Indo-US Research Professorship. He was a Visiting Scholar at Department of Global Health, College of Public Health, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, USA in 2015 and 2017 and also at Institute of Parasitology, University of South Bohemia, Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic during June 2017. He has published research papers in peer reviewed journals of high repute and has authored a book and chapters.
