Dr. Maria J. Matos graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Porto in 2006. She completed her first Ph.D in 2010 in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Chemical Science and Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Cagliari (Italy) and her second Ph.D in 2013 in the Department of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). She is co-author of more than 49 scientific publications, in prestigious international journals, in the field of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry and she presented more than 60 communications (poster and oral communications) in several scientific events. She is also co-author of a patent and two book chapters. She has been referee of more than 20 relevant journals in the field, and also of different evaluation committees. She was guest-editor of a special issue in 2012 of Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry.
In addition to her research experience, Maria has teaching experience (courses 2011-2012 and 2012-2013) at the University of Santiago de Compostela. She has been co-director of pre-graduated and master studentís projects. After a stay of invited researcher at the University of Chile, in January of 2014, she joined the research group led by Prof. Fernanda Borges (University of Porto) as postdoctoral fellow.
Medicinal Chemistry particularly in the early stages of the process, which involves the design, synthesis and biological screening of new compounds based on heterocyclic scaffolds; Drug Discovery, in particular theoretical studies, synthetic methodologies, purification and characterization of new compounds, and pharmacological assays and models. Our major project involves the design and development of new strategies to direct the synthesis and pharmacological studies of natural product-based compounds.
