Dr. Baljit S. Moonga is a Scientific Review Officer in the Musculoskeletal, Oral, and Skin Sciences Integrated Review Group. He came to CSR from Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, where he was a research professor. He obtained his initial research training in physical-organic chemistry that led to the award of a Ph.D. Thereafter, he shifted focus toward cell and molecular biology, and obtained a second Ph.D. in medicine from University of London, UK. Since then, he has held faculty positions at several institutions, including the University of London, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Moonga co-discovered the calcium-sensing receptor on the osteoclast, a cell that resorbs bone. Over-activity of osteoclasts causes osteoporosis. Dr. Moonga has either authored or co-authored over 127 peer reviewed publications in scientific journals and book chapters that form a foundation for future studies on osteoclast formation and function studies.
