Dr. Saad B Qasim graduated with a Bachelors degree in Dentistry from Baqai Medical University in 2004-05. Thereon he went for his Masters in Science Degree from Queen Mary University of London in Dental Biomaterials (2006-07). He worked as a Research Scholar at King Saud University in the Dental Biomaterials Research Chair (2010-12) and was engaged in collaborative research initiatives in between University of Sheffield, National University of Singapore and Hong Kong University.
During his tenure he has managed to publish and present at various International conference and high impact journals. Dr. Saad has special interest in Nano biomateirals, Tissue engineering, Dental composites, Endodontics and Periodontal regeneration. His Ph.D is aimed at synthesizing a functionally graded Guided Tissue Regenerative (GTR) membrane for treating Periodontal diseases.
Currently available GTR membranes have certain mechanical and biofunctional limitation that remain unmet. The objectives were to make a biocompatible, biodegradable spatially designed functionally graded, occlusive membrane aimed at Regenerating the periodontal apparatus comprising of complex arrangements of Periodontal ligaments, alveolar bone and cementum. Scaffolds were characterized by SEM, Raman imaging and Mapping, FTIR Spectroscopy, Tensile tests under moist and dry conditions were also performed. Human osteosarcoma and Progenitor cell lines were used for culturing and assessing Matrix deposition over 28 days by Collagen and calcium assays.
Currently he is working in collaboration with researchers at Interdisciplinary research centre in Biomedical Materials Research (IRCBM) COMSATS Institute and providing biological characterization to the scaffolds being synthesised at this centre. Multidisciplinary work is being carried out from synthesis of different formulations of Bioglass, Macroporous Scaffolds to extraction of Hydroxyapatite from Fish scales. Another collaborative work with Summy State University in Ukraine is underway to assess the in-vivo response of the freeze gelated porous membranes created during his Ph.D project.
