Dr. Tsai received his Medical Degree from Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1991, completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship at the prestigious Hospital das Clinics – Faculdade de Medicina USP in 1996. Dr. Tsai came to the United States in 1999 to pursue an REI fellowship at the Center of Reproductive Medicine and Infertility, New York Presbyterian Hospital –Cornell Medical Center. After finishing his four-year Ob Gyn residency at Saint Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center in New York, Dr. Tsai joined the Bellevue Hospital Center Ob Gyn department as an Assistant Professor in 2006.
As a clinician-educator, Dr. Tsai’s contributions to medical education havebeen recognized both locally and nationally. Dr. Tsai has also been the recipient of numerous teaching awards in recognition of his dedication to the advancement of medical education including the following: the prestigious “Distinguished Teacher in the Clinical Sciences Award”; “The Leonard J. Tow Humanism in Medicine Faculty Award” by NYU School of Medicine; elected Faculty Marshall at the graduation ceremonies of the classes of 2010 and 2011; recipient of the APGO Excellence in Teaching Award by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2007; awarded the CREOG National Faculty Award by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and The Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2008; and received the “Gordon W. Douglas Faculty Teaching Award” in 2011 and the Thirteenth Annual Pessary Award in 2013.
In 2011, Dr. Tsai was appointed chief of service of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bellevue Hospital Center. Since then, he has been actively involved in quality improvement of the department, devoting a particular focus to the improvement of patient safety and team communication. Under Dr. Tsai’s leadership, the Bellevue Obstetrics service was the recipient of the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative Obstetrical Improvement Project’s 2013 Quality Improvement Award, one of the highest Obstetrics quality accolades bestowed by New York State health department.
The main scholarship contributions of Dr. Tsai are evidenced by the many abstracts and publications listed in his CV. His research interests include a broad range of topics in obstetrics and gynecology, with a particular focus on menstrual disorders and minimally invasive surgery for gynecological pathology. Dr. Tsai serves asan ad-hoc reviewer and editorial board member of several prestigious scientific journals in Obstetrics and Gynecology, including the New England Journal of Medicine. In addition to Dr. Tsai’s commitment to teaching, research, and his leadership role, he has maintained a busy clinical practice with a high volume of patients. For four consecutive years, between 2010 and 2013, Dr. Tsai received the “Certificate of Commendation” from the Office of Patient Advocacy, Bellevue Hospital Center, New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (NYC-HHC) for excellence in patient care. Dr. Tsai is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese (Mandarin) and Dialect of Taiwan.
