Lucio Souza Goncalves, DDS, MSc, PhD, is Associate Professor of Periodontology at the Estacio de Sa University (Post-Graduate Program – Master and PhD) and Research Affiliate in Oral Microbiology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). He received his Dental Degree (1988), Master’s degree in Periodontology (2000), and PhD in Oral Microbiology (2006) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He also completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Oral Microbiology at the University of Otago (2014) in a collaborative research with Dr. Gregory J. Seymour and Dr. Nicholas Heng in Oral Microbiology on a study involving oral microbiome in HIV-infected Brazilian children using an Ion Torrent sequencing platform. He has a background in oral microbiology and periodontology and appropriate experience in epidemiology and biostatistics. He has worked in academia for seventeen years and has developed research projects in oral microbiology and periodontology as well as lecturing to undergraduates and postgraduates and supervising MSc and PhD students. He has studied several oral features in HIV infected patients: clinical and microbiology profile of periodontal diseases, microbiology and immunology markers of endodontic infections. Other research includes sulphate-reducing bacteria in oral sites, and oral microbiome in HIV infected children. Prof. Gonçalves is a member of the peer-review Board of the Journal of Periodontology, Archives of Oral Biology, BMC Oral Health, Oral Diseases, Journal of Oral Microbiology, Journal of Periodontal Research, AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, and International Dental Journal.
