Biography

Dr. Fernando Martínez Sagasti, MD, PhD was born in 1967 in Logroño (Spain). He completed his undergraduate program in Medicine at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) (1985-91). He passed the Spanish National Medical Exam to choosing the Intensive Care Medicine Specialty at “Hospital Clínico San Carlos” in Madrid (Spain) (1992-1996). Then he worked as Attending Physician at the Intensive Care Department of “Hospital Universitario de Canarias” (Spain) (1997-1999). He was moved to “Hospital Clínico San Carlos” (Madrid) as Attending Physician (1999-2001) and later to “Hospital Universitario Príncipe de Asturias” (Alcalá de Henares, Madrid) (2001-2005).

He obtained his MD degree in 2002 at the University of Zaragoza investigating how the polymorphisms of several cytokines involved in the inflammatory response to the cardiopulmonary bypass in patients operated on cardiac diseases influences the low output postoperative state. Finally, he came back to his current position at Hospital Clínico San Carlos in 2005 as Attending Physician and Chief of Medical Residents (2007-2016). He has been Associate Professor in Medicine at Universidad Complutense (Madrid) since 2011. Recently, he has been appointed Chief of the Medical-Surgical Unit of the Intensive Care Department at “Hospital Clínico San Carlos”, Madrid.

He is a member of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SEMICYUC) and European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM). Since 2015 he is one of the examiners of the European Diploma in Intensive Care (EDIC).
