Dr. Abdulsamie HANANO is a principal investigator in the Department of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology in the AECS, the Atomic Energy Commission of Syria. He accomplished his Ph.D. in the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology (IBMP) in association with Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France. He received a post-doctoral position in INRA, the Institut national de la recherche agronomique, Dijon, France, in the analysis of genes expression. As leader of a newly established group, we initiate a new research program in the field of detoxification enzymes and xenobiotic-metabolizing biosystems. Two principal issues are addressed in our research. The first concerns the interaction between plant and the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including dioxins and other dangerous environmental pollutants, in the aim to identify the molecular and biochemical mechanisms involved in plant responses to such compounds. The second is related to the ecotoxicological effects of such xenobiotics on plants as well as on soil microbial communities. In parallel, we were recently interested to study the molecular and biochemical regulation of the biosynthesis of fungal toxins.
