Dr. Habil. (PhD) Cristina A. Dehelean is Professor of Toxicology (since 2014), Head of the Department of Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, "Victor Babes" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara, Romania. Currently she holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (since 2012). Her habilitation thesis is focused on pharmaco-toxicological evaluations of therapeutic compounds performed on in vitro and in vivo experimental models. The scientific interest developed during the PhD period, since 2004 and continued with an intense improvement of technical and presentation skills during trainings to different Eurotox and other Congresses courses and a Leonardo scholarship (programme RO-2004-PL 93056-TD training of "European Phytotherapists for Discovery of New Medications"). The main directions of her scientific work were: the triterpenic compounds, like betulinic acid and the development and characterization of new formulations in terms of in vitro and in vivo evaluations. She and her group developed important skin cancer experimental models both by cell/body transfer (human and murine cell lines/murine host) and photochemical carcinoma (also included UVB exposure). The area of interest included also application of novel techniques (RAMAN, non-invasive measurements) on biological models and the correlation with classical methods (histological and immunohistochemical). The future perspectives includ new experimental models (EBA, mammary carcinoma, etc) and the evaluation of new therapeutic possibilities especially related to lupan skeleton compounds corroborated with participation on their mechanism description and evaluation. The research group of pharmaco-toxicological evaluations will offer reproducible and defined experimental models of important pathologies like skin carcinoma (including melanoma) and new formulations with biologically active compounds.
